Section Title:
Stress/Health AA Communities
Section Info:
Topic: Stress and Health in African American Communities This course will use sociological, African American Studies and other frameworks to understand the processes related to how the social environment (racism, unaffordable housing, etc.) can affect the health of individuals. We will also examine activities and programs that are promising as it relates to eliminating health disparities. Our experiential approach to community-engaged scholarship will examine how segregated neighborhoods with high levels of violence (like Englewood in Chicago and the North End in Champaign) affect African Americans’ mental and physical health. We will examine how stress gets “under the skin” to affect gene expression in genes regulating the immune system and inflammation. Students will explore the concepts of resistance (Black feminist thought) and resiliency (e.g., the importance of linked lives and social networks) and examine whether they protect African Americans from the negative consequences of stress. COVID-19 and its devasting effects on African American communities will be addressed. Students will also help to develop products that are important to community organizations and community members as they seek to improve the health of residents. Restricted to Sociology Major, Sociology Minor or Criminology, Law, and Society Minor during advanced enrollment. Remaining seats will become available during open registration.
