Section Info:
Please note, this course MEETS IN PERSON. This course examines the history of journalism through film and literature. We consider movies that cover journalism history from the 1880s to the present, looking to them as texts that can tell us about the history of the profession, changes in technology, and the role and position of journalism as a social and political institution. We will also read two to three books that help structure conversations around race and gender in journalism. Students will be expected to watch movies on their own, and in some cases purchase rentals on commercial streaming services. The in-person component will be limited to seminar-style discussion.
