Outsiders Looking In/ Insiders Looking Out: Novels Written by French /not French authors. This course will examine the works and points of view of French writers who have an outsider's perspective due to birthplace or personal connection to a foreign land, yet who are considered to be fundamentally "French" writers. The overall larger theme of this class is: ''What constitutes a French literary work and who is a French author?" Specifically, we will consider the backdrop against which these authors were writing. Starting with Claire de Duras, we will study a novel that is one of the earliest French works to address race relations betweenthe French and the colonyof Senegal. Additionally, we will take into account Duras' relationship with the island ofMartinique (another French colony). With Marguerite Duras and Albert Camus we will examine the writings of authors who were born in French colonies and their hybrid existence. Through L'amant and Le premier homme we will consider the portrayal of the colonies and particularly the interaction between those who are French and those who are "natives." We willalso analyze the inter-play between the colonizing mission and the literature produced under that gaze. With J.M.G. Le Clézio, we will consider an author who is born in France but who frequently refers to himself as Mauritian. His dual portrayal of France and the Saharan Desert in Desert will allow for further consideration of cultural hybridity and its representation in literature. In the realm of cinema, we will view Marjane Satrapi's adaptation of her graphic novel Persepolis. With Satrapi,we begin to enter the realm of littérature-monde en français as she is an Iranian author with no "formal" ties to France. Finally, the matter of cultural hybridity brings us to consider the work of Atiq Rahimi, an Afghan author writing in France. ''Who/what is a French author?
