Secondary Data Analysis
Section Info:
Synchronous attendance required. Blackboard/Compass LMS. Prerequisite: EPSY 580 or equivalent. Federal and state governments make many large data sets available, covering topics as diverse as student learning, teacher tenure, adolescent science and math proficiency, school funding, adult literacy, census data, and much more. Repositories such as the UIUC IDEALS, Michigan ICPSR and others make research data sets available. Data to answer pressing research questions may have already been collected, but secondary data analysis poses specific challenges. This course provides instruction, practice (SPSS or R, student chooses), and feedback on •IRB/privacy/confidentiality •funding for/workshops on secondary data analysis •using data codebooks •operationalizing constructs with extant items and questionnaires •literature review for secondary data analysis •exploratory factor analysis, reliability, validity •merging files, aggregating, disaggregating, and combining variables to identify subgroups •keeping track of data steps •using weights to account for sampling •handling missing data •screening for non-independence •using dataset documentation in writing for publication. The course combines individual assignments and group projects that could result in a publishable paper. Questions? Contact the instructor at jcromley@illinois.edu.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.

Mobile Apps
Section Info:
Mobile Apps for Teaching, Learning, and Educational Research - This course will focus the design, development, and uses of mobile apps for teaching and learning. We will explore a wide range of apps and contexts and get hands on experiences using and developing apps for learning. The course will be structured around three themes: (1) review of empirical research on the design of apps for learning and health education, (2) review and analysis of existing apps for educational contexts, and (3) hands-on creation of apps using existing toolkits for design and implementation (e.g., AppInventor2). In the course, you will learn how to critically evaluate existing apps that are claimed to be educational, identify trends of app usage by educators, students, and in research, and engage in class projects with other students to design, build, and share prototypes. No programming skills are required to take the course.
