Diversity and Pedagogy
Section Info:
This seminar is designed to provide historical knowledge and understanding about underlying systems of racial inequity as well as the enduring effects of inequity in education today. We will explore how the concepts of culturally relevant pedagogy, diversity, inclusivity, multiculturalism, and social and emotional trauma emerged in education literature. Of special import, is how these concepts inform literacy: assessment, practice, and research. Independently, students will address a specific concern of educational inequity as part of a culminating final project.

Latinxs & Education
Section Info:
Synchronous attendance required. Moodle LMS. This seminar surveys the educational experiences of Latinx students, families, and communities in the United States as historically and presently impacted by the social construct of race. It assumes the theoretical stance of intersectionality as a lens that illuminates the ways Latinx education occurs at the nexus of race, gender, sexuality, class, and citizenship status. Specific examples of how Latinx communities throughout the Midwest have experienced, mitigated, and resisted institutional racism in education will allow us to gain a more concrete understanding of the interplay between larger schooling structures and Latinx lives. A special emphasis will be placed on critical race theory and Latina/o critical theory as frameworks that illuminate race in education while centering the experiences of Students of Color. The material thus challenges us to disentangle the effects of race, gender, class, sexuality, and immigration status on Latinx educational attainment and achievement.

Perspectives on Global Studies
Section Info:
MEETS WITH GLBL 501. Global Studies is an emerging and rapidly changing field. It is well on the way to becoming a new field of study among the major research universities in the United States and abroad. It is also more than a discipline. Today it is increasingly expected that holders of graduate degrees—whether professional degrees in Medicine, Law or Business, Masters or Ph.D.—also acquire an understanding of key global concepts and debates along with training in their primary disciplines. This course provides that much-needed analytical and methodological understanding.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
