Section Title:
Teaching in Literature
Section Info:
This seminar is designed to prepare students from a wide variety of backgrounds to teach literature at the undergraduate level. Although our discussions will be framed by readings in pedagogical theory (and other, topically relevant articles) chosen by the students, our emphasis will be on practical techniques and skills: how to develop effective syllabi; how to teach a variety of genres; how to lead a discussion; how to manage classrooms; how to adapt our teaching methods to online instruction platforms. We will discuss common problems and challenges that instructors may encounter in the classroom and pool our experiences to find ways of managing these challenges. The course will feature many practical exercises that will result in the development of teaching materials that will be useful for future courses and for the job market.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Creative Writing or English major(s) or minor(s). Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
