This course explores (1) how the nature of human communication is shaped by the human ability to learn and use language, and (2) how the nature of human communication is shaped by the properties of the linguistic instruments humans have constructed. The course will introduce basic concepts of cognitive theories of linguistic communication, the empirical and theoretical issues that animate the study of linguistic communication, and the variety of disciplinary perspectives and research methods that can be brought to bear on those issues.
