Introduces design literacy and promotes an understanding of the field of contemporary design. Explores design thinking as a common thread that connects all disciplines concerned with the making of things, the solving of problems, and the organization of information. Through a series of lectures, case studies, and simple design projects, this course offers an extensible framework of tools and strategies that can be applied across multiple disciplinary boundaries.

Design for Divergence: Problem Solving and Creativity. Students will tackle real-world, challenge-based projects and solve problems through design strategies to generate a diverse set of solutions. This course will cover methods for developing creative skill and generating ideas through design and creativity theory. Topics applied to problem-solving challenges include: play + creativity, problem-solving using game theory, role of design + empathy, and divergent thinking idea generation. Problem-solving methods will emphasize the graphic design process through the visual communication of ideas, but challenges covered will be highly interdisciplinary and this class is open to all majors.
