From Muddy Waters to Liz Phair, the state of Illinois has been home to diverse forms of music making throughout its history. This course surveys a wide range of music from Illinois, including examples from the blues, jazz, classical, alternative rock, country, house, hip hop, and Indigenous musical traditions. We will also give special consideration to music from Champaign-Urbana and the University of Illinois, such as American Football, Lejaren Hiller, and the 1985 Farm Aid concert. Against the backdrop of relevant historical and social frameworks, we will develop a richer understanding of music’s role in Illinois social life as well as how Illinois musicians have advanced and responded to developments in the world of music at large. Assessments include two written exams; weekly preparation of assigned readings, listening, and viewing; and a final research paper or creative project on an approved topic of the student’s choice. Graduate students will complete a more in-depth final project.
