Section Info:
The Social Individual in the French Enlightenment. Selected topics in philosophical and literary works as well as personal texts. The focus will be on the concept of sociability, on the changing representations of social classes or "conditions”, and on the development of new conceptions of the public sphere and the private self in the long eighteenth century. Writers may include Marivaux, Graffigny, Diderot, Rousseau, Mercier, Rétif, Madame Roland, Staël.
