Section Info:
FREN 324 will introduce you to films in French, some with ties to former colonies, others without. Starting with the works of the “father of francophone cinema” Sembène Ousmane, we will explore how those in the margins are represented in film. The course will be divided into three themes: Colonization, Post-Colonization and Diaspora. Accordingly some films will address aspects of colonization while others will address the legacy of colonization via the African (West African and Maghrebi) Diaspora and the resulting issues of immigration and assimilation (or lack thereof). Certain films will be accompanied by the reading of complimentary critical articles. The films will be screened in class. Films and class discussion will be in French. Please be advised that some films will contain explicit representations of violence and disturbing material in general.
