What does it mean to write the truth? Within the confines of reality, how can we shape our own experience—and the experience of others—in a literary way? How does memory, and all the difficulty that comes with conjuring the past, affect our ability to tell the truth? How are successful essays put together, and what are the tools and structures that we can employ as nonfiction writers to write interesting, engaging, and striking work? These are some of the questions that this course will address. In this class you will explore the craft of literary nonfiction by reading and discussing works by a wide array of writers, and by writing your own material and receiving feedback from your peers in workshop.
