Robots are becoming pervasive throughout contemporary society, including in the context of health behaviors. This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to investigating human-robot interactions within a range of community health contexts. Students will learn how robots can be used to improve health and well-being for populations with diverse needs and capabilities. In addition, students will develop experience with basic technical aspects of robot design and development (e.g., how programming languages are used in conjunction with Robot Operating Systems - ROS). Students will learn how theories of human-robot interaction, technology acceptance, and trust in automation, inform success of robot deployment in community health settings. This course is meant to demystify the field of robotics for community health and illustrate human factors design principles and applied aspects of human-robot interaction research in the context of community health.
