Students in this course will have passed through the preliminary round of the UIUC/UC College New Venture Challenge and will be developing their own original new business ideas. Students may enter the course with ideas that are traditionally for-profit in nature or more socially oriented (either for- or not-for-profit ventures). The course will take the approach of teaching critical research and evaluation skills that will be uniform between these types of ventures, and will address particular points of divergence around the fundraising process. In particular, the course will evaluate the differences in raising capital from VC investors, impact investors, crowdsourcing platforms, etc. Class meeting time: W 5:30 pm – 8:40 pm Polsky Exchange North at 1452 E 53rd St. Chicago This course is for City Scholars Students only.

Whether it’s pitching your project to a manager, selling your startup to investors, or marketing yourself to an employer, students will be equipped to present and persuade like the best. Students participating in the Cozad New Venture Challenge 2020 are encouraged to enroll in this class, although all students interested in storytelling are welcome. 64184	Lecture-Discussion	WP	6:00PM -7:50PM	R	0324 Music Building	Patterson, W	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 01/21/20-05/06/20 Credit: 3 hours Section Title: Hip Hop Entrepreneurship Section Info: Students will explore the cultural landscape of urban America and how technology, engineering, and social entrepreneurship are contextualized and repurposed to support the development and enhancement of existing industries. Using that approach, students will look at how to redevelop existing urban spaces and envision how new millennial spaces will look and function. Principals in fundraising, incubating, marketing, business plan development, sales, intellectual property protection, and business management will be explored. In addition to guest lecturers, entrepreneurial students will collaborate on project-based initiatives in areas including sustainable energy, economic development, affordable housing, STEM education in public schools.
