Provides a panoramic view of literary and cultural production in Spanish America between 1810 and 1900. Special attention paid to the emergence of "national literatures" within specific historical and political contexts.

3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 undergraduate hours or 8 graduate hours if topic varies. Prerequisite: SPAN 316 and SPAN 326.

In the wake of Latin American independence, writers and artists forged new ways of representing Latin American identities. In this course, we will read a variety of foundational texts from the nineteenth century that revise ideas about race, gender, and politics in Latin America. These texts grapple with Latin America's place in the world, as well as timely issues such as slavery, racial mixing, democracy, and the role of women in society.
