Special Topic: Advanced Sculpture. Mise-en-scène (placing on stage) is the term used to describe the devices and props used in film and theater to immerse the viewer in a story. Set design, props, lighting, costumes, and movement all contribute to the aggregate of making meaning. This class will focus on contemporary artists who utilize immersive installation practices to realize other realities. These may include speculative futures, reconstructed pasts, parallel presents, alternative ecologies, and constructed selves, to name just a few. Working collectively over the course of the spring semester, students will work from initial individual responses to prompts, readings and film screenings to begin to find common themes, ideals, and narratives which will lead to fully realized, collaboratively built, highly detailed installations that tell the story of another place/time/reality through 2D, 3D, and 4D objects, artifacts, collections, dioramas, and material archives. This course will rely on makers of all kinds, with a multiplicity of background experiences, expertise, and material strategies. Artists and designers of all disciplines are welcome. Open to grads and undergrads, junior standing is required. Meets with ARTS 456, 1FLAGG 50.
