Section Title:
Mindfulness
Section Info:
Mindfulness is the first of a two-semester sequence. Students are required to set aside time every day in their schedules to practice with mindfulness audios, which are provided by the instructor. Students should plan to take both courses in the sequence. During the first semester, students establish a daily mindfulness practice, learn to work with foundational objects of attention (e.g., breath and body), and learn the theoretical and empirical foundations of mindfulness. This foundational semester will then prepare students for the second course in this sequence (PSYC-341) in which students will deepen their conceptual and experiential understanding of mindfulness while also acquiring the skills to lead brief mindfulness meditations. In the second semester, students will train to lead brief meditations and then the course culminates with students giving their time to teach and lead brief mindfulness meditations in the community. While enrollment prioritizes psychology department majors at the junior and senior levels, others who have an interest in mindfulness and its varied applications including mental health service delivery, research, athletics, corporate wellness programs, and educational settings (e.g., K – 12 classrooms) are also invited to seek instructor permission to join the class.
