Field Experience

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 1 OR 2 hours.

Field based course that exposes students to procedures and methods used in various resource settings in a hands-on manner. Includes weekly field trips to visit representative natural resource and environmental science settings with supporting laboratory exercises. Content of offerings vary by section, but all focus on resource management, environmental quality and assessment, and effects of consumption and use on the environment. Field trips required.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. May be repeated in the same or subsequent semesters to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: NRES 201 and NRES 219.

58305	Laboratory-Discussion	AFR	7:45AM -10:45AM	S	Location Pending	Ward, M	Part of Term: A Date Range: 08/24/20-10/16/20 Credit: 1 hours Section Title: Avian Field Research Section Info: This is a practical course on field research, whose primary purpose is to provide firsthand experience in gathering data on wild birds for scientific research. This course will focus on avian field research techniques, specifically bird monitoring, bird identification, and bird banding. Students will learn about why monitoring bird populations is important in the context of monitoring changes in the environment. In order to monitor bird populations, individual birds must be detected and identified; we will therefore work on bird identification skills. Students will be also be exposed to the skills necessary for banding birds (given the need to socially distance, we will show the students how to choose an area for nets, how the nets are erected, how birds are extracted from a nest, but there will be limited hand-on experience). This class will meet at University of Illinois Arboretum, except for the first class which will meet on Zoom. Students will engage virtually with Illinois municipal officials to study and evaluate various conceptual models and practices in sustainability public policy formulation. 56368	Laboratory-Discussion	SSS	3:00PM -5:00PM	F	W223 Turner Hall	Arai, Y	Part of Term: A Date Range: 08/24/20-10/16/20 Credit: 1 hours Section Title: Soil & Surface Water Sampling Section Info: This course will cover soil and water samples protocol, methods and techniques recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Natural Resource Conservation Services (NRCS). Due to difficulties in accessing subsurface samples, sampling activities focus on surface water samples and top soils. We will visit field sites around the UIUC campus and receive detailed instructions and descriptions of the soil and water sampling methods. Each lecture and field trip will last 1.4 hrs and 2 hrs, respectively. There is no course fee associated with this section of NRES 285.
