Section Title:
"Literature is Useless"
Section Info:
"Literature is Useless " The glorious days of the modern avant-gardes are over, and “l’art pour l’art” seems a notion of yesteryear. In the neoliberal era, all activity must justify its existence according to norms of economic and social efficiency. It is now required of literature that it serves a purpose. In observing key works, trends and debates in 20th and 21st century French literature, we will call into question the usefulness of the notion of usefulness for the study of literature, interrogate the boundaries of the aesthetic and ethico-political spheres, and ask why we (should) continue to read. Readings will include literary and theoretical works, by Bataille, Beckett, Ernaux, Modiano, Perec, Quintane, Rancière, among others. Readings and class discussion in French. First session on 8/25 online. Modalities of face-to-face discussed collectively at first session. Remote attendance accommodated throughout the semester.
