Writing Creative Nonfiction with Publication in Mind - Much contemporary creative nonfiction centers around the self. Memoir and its offshoots comprise much of the creative nonfiction we read in literary journals today. But the field is much broader than merely this. In this class, we will read and explore other sorts of creative nonfiction, including food writing, the literary portrait, and historically-based narrative nonfiction. The course will involve fieldwork and other research with primary-source material, and a mix of workshopping, small-group collaborative work, and individual guidance from the instructor. Our aim in the class will be to produce publication-ready essays. Beyond this, however, emerging poets and fiction writers will learn skills and techniques that they can bring to bear on their poetry and stories. Pre-req: at least one other creative writing workshop course
Restriction(s):
Not intended for Creative Writing or Creative Writing major(s) or minor(s). Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
