Intensive study of special topics in musicology, whether historical, ethnomusicological, or interdisciplinary in approach; seminar format.

4 graduate hours. No professional credit. May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours. Prerequisite: MUS 528A or consent of instructor. For graduate students in Music; this course is intended for performance and composition majors, especially DMA students seeking advanced musicology credit.

Section Info:
Women, Music, and Representation in the 19th Century. In the nineteenth century, women had an increasingly important presence in the Western musical world as composers, musicians, muses, and more. This course has three main parts: First, we will engage with the philosophical and sociocultural ramifications of women participating in music making; second, we will survey a range of nineteenth-century female composers; third, we will examine the way women were represented in certain works by male composers. Through these works, we will discover the social and historical context that contributed to their creation and reception, as well as the social challenges that women faced while forging new artistic pathways.
