In this course, we will explore three fundamental questions about the ideal of a just society. We will do this by exploring three competing theories of justice: utilitarianism, libertarianism, and egalitarian liberalism. We will explore the core ideas of these theories and consider their implications and applications within US law. We will read legal cases that draw on some of these core ideas to answer questions about enforcing sexual morality, protecting free expression, religious liberty, regulating labor markets, guaranteeing the rule of law, ensuring equal opportunities through schools and elections, establishing group rights, and regulating reproductive rights. As a student you will be taught to (1) make explicit some of your fundamental political values that guide your personal convictions about public issues in politics, law and policy, (2) understand and assess arguments in famous court cases, and (3) recognize how you can use common reason to argue about political values and principles on the basis of mutual respect. Restricted to Political Science majors until noon on November 12, 2018. Restriction(s): Not intended for students with Freshman class standing.
