Examines the politics of national parks in the United States, including creation of parks, local support or opposition to parks, and park policy as well as policy questions such as the value of wilderness ecosystem management, endangered species protection, and role of parks in national identity and remembrance of events such as the Civil War, the Indian wars, or the civil rights movement.

This honors course uses the national parks of West Texas and adjacent parts of New Mexico and Coahuila to explore general questions of politics and policy in US national parks. The major focus is Big Bend National Park, a large park that illustrates central challenges in US park management. We will travel to the region in January 2019 before the Spring semester begins. Course will meet from 4:00-5:50pm in 111 David Kinley Hall on the following days: January 29, February 5, and February 12.
