How do words and sentences acquire meaning? What is the relation between thought and language? How do words relate to objects to enable us to say anything about them? What is the difference between the meaning of a sentence and what we are able to communicate by its use? This course will focus on philosophy of language from the early 20th century to the present day. Philosophers such as Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein, Grice, Kripke, Putnam, and others will be read and discussed.
