Topic: Versions françaises de l' Amérique. Examines the representations of the United States (as an empirical or fictionalized country) and of "America" (as a cultural construct) in French texts from the 16th century to the present, including reactions to 9/11 and its afterlives in France. Readings include novels, plays, poems, memoirs, travel narratives, and critical essays from a variety of aesthetic, political and philosophical positions. Texts by Cartier, Chateaubriand, Tocqueville, Céline, Duhamel, Morand, Sartre, de Beauvoir, Morin, Kristeva, Baudrillard, Derrida, Rancière, and others. Readings and discussions in French.
