This course introduces the fundamentals of planning for pedestrian and bicycle transportation. Students will learn about the benefits and challenges of planning for walking and cycling; the roles of plans, policies, and infrastructure in supporting active travel; key elements of infrastructure design; methods to assess safety and access; and processes to create, implement, and evaluate plans and programs. Activities will include interactive discussions, hands-on exercises such as safety audits and site analyses, and a client-based project addressing real-world community needs.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. Credit will not be given for UP 434 if credit was given for UP 494-LB in Fall 2018.

Walking and cycling are becoming increasingly important in efforts to promote health, sustainability, and livability in cities across the globe. Supporting pedestrian and bicycle transportation requires collaboration across multiple disciplines, including urban planning, civil engineering, design, public health, and others. UP494 introduces key concepts and methods that help this collaboration to take place in support of healthier, more sustainable cities. In this course, students will learn about the benefits and challenges of planning for walking and cycling; the roles of plans, policies, and infrastructure in supporting active travel; fundamentals of pedestrian and bicycle facility design; methods to assess pedestrian and bicycle safety and access; processes to create, implement, and evaluate plans and programs; and national and international perspectives on planning and facility design. Students will participate in interactive class discussions and activities, conduct hands-on exercises such as safety audits and site analyses, and complete a client-based project to apply class principles and skills to real-world community needs.
