Section Title:
Negotiating Landscape Zines
Section Info:
Landscape is a relationship between humans and nature, and that relationship is negotiated in a wide range of media. This seminar explores how contemporary landscape is being negotiated through zines: self-published, low-budget, small-run, print publications. As vehicles of self-expression and with content typically outside the mainstream, zines have proliferated in recent decades, and the relationship between humans and nature has become a significant theme in many new works. To give context to that development, this course will begin with practical and critical readings about zines, taking into account their history, formats, methods of production and distribution, and impacts. Participants will then explore firsthand a wide variety of landscape zines (e.g., photo narratives, queer botanicals, survival manuals) produced during the past decade in order to understand how those works construct understandings of humans and nature and negotiate relationships between them. As a semester-long project, each student will develop and self-publish an original zine in a print edition of 12, interpreting the contemporary situation of landscape according to personal understandings and priorities.
