This course provides the perspective that economic reasoning is a valuable critical thinking approach to social science inquiry and demonstrates how this perspective helps students understand health care policy and market issues. This course describes the role and methods of economics as applied to health care delivery in the United States.

Park St., Urbana, IL. 61801 The Strategic Planning for Healthcare Organizations class utilizes the “Strategic Management of Health Care Organizations” textbook by Peter M. Ginter. The class will develop student’s strategic planning skills by covering the following material: • The Nature of Strategic Management • Understanding and Analyzing the General Environment and the Health Care Environment • Service Area Competitive Advantage • Internal Environmental Analysis and Competitive Advantage • Directional Strategies • Developing Strategic Alternatives • Evaluation of Alternatives and Strategic Choice • Value-Adding Service Delivery Strategies • Value-Adding Support Strategies • Communicating the Strategy and Developing Action Plans These areas of strategic planning are essential for health administrators to run healthcare organizations efficiently and effectively. The class will be a required class in the Master of Science in Health Administration curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to apply the above strategic planning skills to Carle Foundation Hospital (CFH). Materials such as previous CFH strategic plans will be analyzed and assessed in class.
