Robots are becoming pervasive throughout contemporary society, including in the context of health behaviors. This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to investigating human-robot interactions within a range of community health contexts. Students will learn how robots can be used to improve health and well-being for populations with diverse needs and capabilities. In addition, students will develop experience with basic technical aspects of robot design and development (e.g., how programming languages are used in conjunction with Robot Operating Systems - ROS). Students will learn how theories of human-robot interaction, technology acceptance, and trust in automation, inform success of robot deployment in community health settings. This course is meant to demystify the field of robotics for community health and illustrate human factors design principles and applied aspects of human-robot interaction research in the context of community health. Mechanisms of positive change following trauma exposure will be studied. Individual and community-level evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies will be investigated. This course has been designed for students who are interested in pursuing a rehabilitation career to explore various rehabilitation professions. A review of disability and rehabilitation interventions will be covered. Students will have opportunities to tour rehabilitation facilities and chat with rehabilitation professionals to better understand rehabilitation practice. Students will be required to actively participate in discussions about how rehabilitation interventions (PT, OT, P&O, AT) can help improve functional performance and quality of life in people with disabilities.
