Section Title:
China into Film
Section Info:
Topic: China into Film. The films we shall view together are feature films from the 1990s-2010s that were commercially produced and distributed in the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan (Republic of China), and the U.S.A. I chose particular films from among the thousands that were made during these three decades for the powerful visions of modern China that their directors created. This course has several related goals: to learn something about post-World War II China (1945-); to learn something about Chinese cinema from the 1980s and 90s; and to examine how a feature film constructs an image of its Chinese subject, an image that is more than a representation or reflection of modern Chinese society. To accomplish these goals, we shall want to learn how to watch films, how to think about them, and how to write about them. Finally, through abbreviated lectures and readings, we shall examine other contemporary art forms that complement the films we study.
