Topic: Introduction to American Art. This course examines the art of the United States since 1776, with an emphasis on the cultural objects and events that have profoundly shaped how American identity is seen and understood. We will investigate hard-fought and ongoing representational struggles over the nation’s territories, histories, and ideals, as we explore nearly 250 years of American image-making, ranging from Civil War monuments and abstract expressionist paintings to Lakota ledger drawings and Black Lives Matter protests. Enrollment is open to all undergraduates—no prior knowledge of art history or American history is required.
