Intensive study of special topics in musicology, whether historical, ethnomusicological, or interdisciplinary in approach; seminar format.

4 graduate hours. No professional credit. May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours. Prerequisite: MUS 528A or consent of instructor. For graduate students in Music; this course is intended for performance and composition majors, especially DMA students seeking advanced musicology credit.

Latin American Art Music This course is a survey of significant ideas and topics relevant to the study of Latin American art music. We will examine music’s significance in the colonial era; art music’s relevance to nation building and the formation of national and racial identities; art music and hemispheric and transnational politics; and musical practice and social change at the turn of the twenty-first century. Through these critical discussions, we will explore many pivotal moments, works, and composers in the history of Latin American art music.
