Section Title:
Jazz Studies
Section Info:
This course will look at the literature in the field of jazz studies with a focus on recent critical and scholarly debates. We will consider both academic writing and writing in the popular press, and will look at writing with historical, sociological, theoretical, and music critical orientations. Throughout the goal will be to understand the investments, stakes, and purposes of specific genres of jazz writing, as well as to evaluate its relationships to jazz practice. This will be a writing-intensive course, with students expected to produce a number of short writing assignments and a final paper in the genres we study throughout the semester. Students who do not have a working knowledge of jazz history will be expected to do some remedial work at the beginning.
