Topic: Racial Inequality in the US. Meets with SOC 596. This course will explore racial stratification in the United States with particular attention to patterns of inequality that persist across various social institutions affecting quality of life for racial/ethnic minorities. Topics to be discussed include: residential segregation, housing access, environmental racism, health disparities, educational inequalities, discrimination in hiring/labor relations, immigration, and gender/sexuality. While the focus will be on structural patterns of inequality, readings will also address the day-to-day practices that produce and sustain these racial disparities.
