Section Info:
Topic: "Mexican Roots of Chicana/Chicano Feminism." This course will have students read classical Mexican texts, icons, and women authors who dialogued in substantial ways with U.S Chicana Feminism. The Virgin of Guadalupe, Malinche, Frida Khalo, Coyolxahuqui, Coatlicue, La llorona, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, often appear in the texts of Ana Castillo, Sandra Cisneros, Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Gloria Anzaldua, Norma Alarcon. The course will trace the origin of the Chicana feminist discussions on patriarchy, spirituality, intellectualism, by having students read the original texts of the apparition of the Virgin of Gadalupe in the Nican Mopohua. Students will also read original poetry by Sor Juana Ines and Rosario Castellanos.
