Graduate Seminar in Ecology. Topic: Species Interactions. Species interactions are one of the key respects in which ecological systems are always more than the sum of their parts. In this seminar we’ll discuss the role of species interactions from a variety of perspectives. What options do we have to model interactions mathematically, and when do we need to understand the details of species’ behavior, traits and metabolism to adequately describe them? When and how can we infer the presence of species interactions (strength and type)? And how do the effects of interactions change with spatial and temporal scale? We’ll take on some classic and recent literature on this topic, and I’ll encourage participants to bring up their own questions and/or data related to the topic.
