Entomological science continues to provide answers to many of the widely and publicly debated issues including climate change, invasive species, integrated pest management, insecticide resistance management, use of genetically modified crops and pollinator health. Approximately, 2.5 million new scientific papers are published in academic journals including entomology journals every year. Yet, many of these novel scientific solutions are only meaningful to the science community. On average, only 10 people read a given scientific article in its entirety; so clearly, the public is not being reached. While graduate students in entomology are under no obligation to make entomological science findings accessible to the public, it benefits everyone if they do. This seminar class will explore the various avenues that students can use to communicate scientific findings relevant to integrated pest management, pollinator health, climate change, insecticide resistance management with the public. Students will learn the art of writing and pitching entomological science related-opinion pieces to various media outlets including NPR, Scientific American, and The Conversation. We will read some of the Entomological Society of America Science position statements and other well written opinion pieces. At the end of the seminar course, students will be expected to write a publishable opinion piece.
