Spanish Cultural Studies I

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

A critical analysis of historical events, institutions, artistic production, symbols and values representative of Spanish (Iberian) cultures. Particular emphasis on the relationship between specific cultural practices and/or values and the construction of national identities prior to 1700.

May be repeated in separate terms to a maximum of 6 hours, if topics vary. Prerequisite: SPAN 228.

	49955	Lecture-Discussion	E	1:00PM -1:50PM	MWF	G20 Foreign Languages Building	Martinez-Quiroga, P	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 01/17/17-05/03/17 Section Info: Topic Title: "Iberian Cultures in Premodern Spain" In this course we will explore the construction of a national culture in early modern Iberia, with particular emphasis on the relationship between specific cultural practices/values and the construction of national identities prior to 1700 and the racial / religious / ethnic / cultural heterogeneity of early modern Spain. Students will be introduced to the critical analysis of historical, legal, religious, literary, scientific, cartographic, and visual documents of the early modern period. We will complement the analysis of past texts / documents with the inclusion of contemporary representations of that past and its uses for national representations. Students must meet the prerequisite requirements for this course (found in the Catalog Entry) or will be told to drop on the first day of classes. Non-registered students are not allowed to sit in or audit.
