Topic: Recycling the Classics: Adaptation and Re-use in Japanese Cultural History 1000-present. Adaptation is common in many cultures but in few other cases has the past been so consistently and compulsively re-used as in Japanese cultural history. This course explores the uses and abuses of traditional culture in a broad range of media and genres from medieval times to the present day. Why do classic works continue to exert such a powerful fascination on later writers and artists? What is gained (or lost) in repackaging existing material for new audiences? Why is the tea ceremony still so popular today? And what does traditional culture have to do with social status, gender, and even national identity? We will answer these questions while developing skills in interdisciplinary, comparative cultural criticism.
