Section Info:
This course aims to introduce what political science has uncovered about mass political behavior. In other words, the course focuses on the behaviors of regular individuals, rather than political elites, and seeks to understand and explain how, when, and why regular citizens and non-citizens engage in politics. Students will learn how various scholars have defined what behaviors count as political and what political scientists know about the personal traits and societal circumstances that lead to various types of political behaviors. The class will also explore the frontiers of political behavior research by laying out current debates and controversies in political science about voting, protesting, and other political behaviors. At the end of the course, students should have a working knowledge of the ways in which regular citizens can influence the political process and the factors that affect how, when, and why people choose to participate.
