Section Title:
Money and Politics
Section Info:
Topic: Money and Politics The theme of money & politics is a longstanding concern of Western political thought, and it is obviously an increasingly prominent dimension of U.S. and global politics. We will explore continuity and change in the understanding of money and politics since classical Greece. There are instructive differences over time, and we will study these. However, from Aristotle to Adam Smith, the teaching of the western tradition on the implications of money in politics has been remarkably consistent. What is that teaching? How do today’s predominant assumptions and practices compare? Knowing this background history and political theory can offer us more incisive understanding of the politics and economics of our moment.
