Section Title:
Race & Politics Reproduction
Section Info:
Topic: "Race and the Politics of Reproduction." Meets with GWS 295. This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to exploring the racial politics of reproduction in the United States. Building on reproductive justice scholars’ assertion that reproduction carries profoundly different meanings for women based on race, class, and citizenship status this course examines how pregnancy and motherhood are experienced, shaped, made accessible, and denied across disparate groups of women. Students will also take a look into how women’s reproductive capacity becomes a subject of national debate and why the reproductive capacity of women of color has often been figured as central to national discussions over how to solve social problems such as poverty and crime.
