Section Info:
This course, structured as a survey of British literature from 1800 to the present, focuses on the category of the “weird,” a recently revived genre in fiction rooted in the eighteenth-century gothic. Over the course of the semester, we will unpack how poems, plays, novels, short stories, and films portray what we might call “weird”--including monsters, machines, creatures, and the supernatural. We will be thinking about how we define humans in opposition (or in relationship to) monsters and machines, and how these categories quickly become blurred. Over the course of the semester, we will encounter vampires, mermaids, wizards, giant squid-worshipping cults, and haunted body parts. We will read a survey of a variety of texts from authors including Mary Shelley, Christina Rossetti, H.G. Wells, Salman Rushdie, J.K. Rowling, and China Mieville.
