Section Info:
Focusing on early German cinema, this course surveys the earliest films through 1945. Many of these films laid the ground work for international cinema and are benchmarks in the history of the genre. The course explores, for example, early film’s fascination with gothic horror in Nosferatu and the Golem and psychological disintegration in The Student of Pragueand Caligari. It covers classics of cinema with films by E. Lubitsch, G. Papst, and F. W. Murnau, early science fiction with as Metropolis, and Weimar cinema with Fritz Lang’s Mabuse, New Objectivity in the documentary Berlin Symphony of a Metroplolis. We will analyze the new technology of sound in films such as M and the Blue Angel. The course also covers propaganda film with Brecht’s Kuhle Wampe and the party documentary Triumph des Willens. Films will generally be in German with English subtitles; all discussions and readings for the course are in English. Class consists of screenings, discussions, response papers, and a final project.
