Topic: Language and Culture in Everyday Life: Korean Discourse as a Window Into Culture, Perception, Cognition, Identity, and Taste. This course is designed to examine in-depth the interconnectedness between culture and language and the specific ways that such interconnections influence perception, cognition, ideology, stance, and identity, with a focus on the Korean language and Korean people (both in Korea and outside). The topics that the course addresses are: language and discourse, discourse and culture, family relationships, friendship, interpersonal closeness and distance, politeness, social identity, pop culture and the Korean Wave, media discourse (dramas, advertisements, movies, TV), gender, health and wellness, food, fashion, and taste. This section is offered through the CIC Course Share Program hosted by Pennsylvania State University and will be video-conference taught for participating universities. Class will meet from Jan. 19 - April 29, with no class meetings the weeks of March 6 and March 19. CLASS WILL MEET IN 4057 LH.
