Section Title:
Prosody of East Asian Language
Section Info:
This course explores the way prosody is used in speech communication with special attention to East Asian Languages. Prosody is the music of speech. It is the part of the speech signal where speakers control pitch, timing, loudness and voice quality to convey meanings beyond the sequence of words. The course materials will draw heavily from the rich resources of East Asian languages, which include a fascinating array of prosody typology including tone languages (Chinese and most Chinese dialects) and accentual languages (Japanese and Korean). The course will use experimental methods to explore characteristics of tone and accent, how they interact with other communicative functions such as the expression of question/statement, emphasis or emotions, and how second language learners acquire such systems.
