Section Info:
Through this course students will be exposed to: 1) abiotic factors of a stream, 2) how these factors can affect biotic communities, and 3) macroinvertebrate classification and sampling methods. The course follows the EPA Water Quality Monitoring volunteer program and will culminate with a study of various nearby stream locations. As such, students will gain hands on experience associating stream communities to stream conditions through the use of diversity indices, biotic integrity calculations, and abiotic data. The course will culminate in a written report of the findings at each stream and a discussion of the differences between locations.
