Introduction to Shakespeare

Section Info: This course will examine a selection of well-known Shakespearean plays in different genres. One goal of the class will be to put students in position to understand just why Shakespeare’s plays have so often been considered the high-water mark of English literature. To that end, we will focus primarily upon plays that are among the better-known items in the canon. Another goal, however, will be to think about how these plays would have been understood in their own era: how some of their urgent thematic concerns are maybe unfamiliar to us, in other words, and how they might have worked as performance texts within the energetic, experimental theater culture(s) of early modern London. Class sessions will be discussion-based, and there will be short, analytical papers assigned as well as quizzes and exams designed to encourage and test knowledge of the assigned primary texts.
