Section Info:
In this class, we will explore the short story as a form. We will read a wide range of short fiction, moving across cultures, history, and literary traditions. Some authors will include Alice Munro, James Baldwin, Elizabeth Tallent, Amy Hemple, Dambudzo Marechera, William Gay, and Audrey Petty, among others. In reading their work, we will examine the mechanics of the form—plot, character, tone and style, symbolism, and so on. Over the course of the semester, you will develop strategies for analyzing and writing about the short story genre.
