We will focus on different periods of Brazilian cinema (chanchada, Cinema Novo, Cinema Marginal, etc) and their relationship to broader economic, political, and cultural junctures in 20th and 21st century Brazil. We will pay particular attention to issues of race, gender, and the urban/rural divide. The course meets M/W for extended periods, as weekly screenings will be held during class time.
